Rock Bags - Engineered For Environmental And Asset Protection

What Are Rock Bag Filter Units

Rock Bag Filter Units are durable nets made from high-grade polyester, filled with rock. They are designed for erosion control and scour protection in rivers, creeks, and coastal environments.

These units also protect man-made structures such as bridge pylons, jetties, sea walls, ports, harbours, and revetments. More recently, they have been used in subsea projects for oil and gas, offshore wind farms, and renewable energy systems.

Rock Bags can be delivered pre-filled for quick deployment or filled directly on-site. They come in sizes from 0.5 to 12 tonnes in both PE and HDPE, allowing engineers to design with precise weights and dimensions. This makes them a faster, lower-maintenance alternative to rip rap and other traditional methods.

A small team can fill and place more than 100 bags in just one day.

Common Applications For Rock Bags

Erosion Control Applications
Rock Bags provide effective erosion control in environments such as rivers, creeks, and coastal zones. Their design stabilizes soil, reduces scour, and dissipates the energy of flowing water.

The filled units function as protective barriers, preventing soil displacement and shoreline degradation. This makes them a preferred choice for maintaining natural habitats and minimising land loss.

Sea Walls and Revetments:

Rock Bags provide a flexible alternative to traditional sea walls and revetments. Unlike rigid structures made of concrete or steel, Rock Bags conform to the natural shape of the shoreline, improving performance and reducing the risk of failure from wave action.

The permeable netting in Rock Bags lets water pass through, relieving hydraulic pressure and minimising damage. This makes them ideal for coastal protection and shoreline stabilisation projects.

River and Creek Bank Stabilization:

Rock Bags provide an effective solution for riverbank and creek bank stabilisation. Lining banks with Rock Bags dissipates the energy of flowing water, reduces erosion, and maintains bank stability.

This method also protects nearby infrastructure such as bridges, culverts, and pipelines from damage caused by bank failure.

Protection of Bridge Pylons:

Bridge pylons are vulnerable to scour, where flowing water erodes sediment around the structure. Rock Bags provide effective scour protection by absorbing water energy and reducing sediment movement.

Their flexibility makes installation quick and efficient, lowering the risk of damage to bridge foundations.

Why Choose Rock Bags:

Versatility: Rock Bags provide a flexible solution for erosion control and infrastructure protection across coastal, riverine, and marine environments.

Flexibility: Unlike rigid structures, Rock Bags adapt to the natural contours of the landscape, offering superior performance against waves, currents, and water flow.

Cost-Effectiveness: Rock Bags reduce construction costs and labor compared to traditional hard structures. They require less material, are easier to transport, and quick to install.

Environmental Benefits: The permeable design allows water and sediment to filter naturally, minimizing environmental impact and protecting surrounding habitats.

Ease of Installation: Rock Bags are simple to transport and install, even in remote or challenging locations, making them a practical choice for erosion prevention and shoreline stabilisation projects.

Now available is 2 material types :

PE – Virgin Polyester + UV stabilizer (outlasts recycled material) 25 to 50 year life cycle (longer when subsurface or vegetated – UV protection)

HDPE – Virgin High Density Polyethylene + UV stabilizer (outlasts recycled and polyester material) 50 – 100 years – recommended for high energy water, coastlines, temporary works, mangroves and other sensitive environments. HDPE has high abrasion resistance and very low micro plastic release in comparison to geosynthetic bags and recycled PE

Rock bags Sizes

1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 Ton
